2019 Teacher Conservation Institute: ForesTREE Experience

The ForesTREE Experience is a two-day professional development workshop for teachers of grades K-8 interested in learning about forest ecosystems and conservation education, and how they can be integrated into the classroom. Day 1 will take place on the Jones State Forest and Day 2 will start at the New Waverly Public Library. Participants will receive 14 CPE hours of SBEC and TEEAC credit as well as Project Learning Tree educator certification.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

  • Teachers of grades K-8 interested in learning about forest ecosystems and conservation education topics, and sharing that knowledge with students in the classroom. 

WHAT TO EXPECT

  • Interact with foresters, biologists, educators, loggers, arborists, fire managers, and landowners who care for forest lands and make products we use every day.
  • Hands-on learning will include resources and activities that you can bring to life in your classroom and schoolyard through citizen science, career exploration, and field study.
  • 14 hours SBEC CPE and 14 hours TEEAC credit. Class time is 8:30 to 4:00 pm each day.
  • DAY 1: William Goodrich Jones State Forest classroom, Conroe - 8:30 am
    • Learn about Texas forest ecosystems, habitat management, forest hydrology, fire ecology, and implications of an endangered bird species that is native to Texas.
    • Receive training in Project Learning Tree's interdisciplinate environmental education curriculum designed to teach students critical and creative thinking.
  • DAY 2: New Waverly Public Library, meet and begin tours - 8:30 am
    • Tour a family owned Tree Farm, timber harvest operation, and working sawmill

REGISTRATION AND COST

  • $30 registration fee include lunch both days, field trip transportation, and training materials
  • Registration is open March 1-May 31. Register early to avoid waitlist.
